A federal judge ruled that the state of Tennessee cannot revoke driver licenses for those who cannot afford to pay their court costs, and must reinstate those previously revoked. The State has appealed the decision.
Previously, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security could revoke the driver license of someone who had failed to pay court costs or fines related to a criminal case. This decision changes the procedure that must be followed. Even though the case has been appealed by the State, in the meantime, the decision is binding and will affect countless drivers whose licenses have been suspended or revoked.
